| I went to Edwards Air Force Base today (Saturday, Oct.22, 2005) to see their airshow and displays. Edwards is located in Kern County in the northwestern part of the Mojave Desert, north of Santa Clarita and Lancaster. It is about 100 miles from Los Angeles. It took me about an hour and a half to get to the Rosamond exit. Then from there, you have to drive ten miles into the base before you actually reach the runway. It took about an hour and a half to drive that ten miles because of all the traffic going into the base. There were a lot of people! That makes it more exciting though. As the traffic jam dragged on and on, my left leg was getting really tired because I drive a stick shift and it was stop and go stop and go. My poor clutch cylinders. I just changed those things not too long ago and it was expensive! Anyway, I was really happy I went. Again, there were a lot of people, and a lot of cute girls too. I was expecting a bunch of geeky guys who were into airplanes, but a lot of girls went too. There were also a lot of families with kids. Lots of Asians there. I was surprised. I went by myself 'cause the two friends that I asked were not interested in going, so I spent the time there all by myself. I enjoyed it though. I was hoping to see the F/A-22 Raptor demonstration but I got there too late for that. I saw the F/A-22 static display though and took a bunch of pictures of it. My favorite plane. The airshow was like six and a half hours long. They flew planes throughout the day. I saw some other planes fly and my favorite demonstration out of the ones that I saw was of the F-16 Falcon. That was the first time that I saw a jet fighter demonstration and it was crazy! The pilot was putting on the afterburners and roaring by, and you could see the fire shooting out of the jet nozzles in the back of the plane. He was performing some dazzling aeronautics such as a control tower fly-by, rolls, flips, flying upside down, a low speed demonstration and a rocket-ship veritical ascent. Impressive. On the ground, there was like one mile of static displays and I pretty much looked at everything. I saw a bunch of classic planes such as the T-38 Talon, the F-16 Falcon, the F-117A Nighthawk, the B-1B Bomber, a McDonnell Douglas jumbo jet and a C-17 Cargo plane, which was like five stories tall. It was massive. It was cool how they let us go inside some of the planes. I climbed aboard the C-17 through the side door and came out the back through the cargo hatch, which was open and led down to the ground. And I got to sit in the cockpit of the McDonnell Douglas. Oh, by the way, they had an SR-71 Blackbird parked outside of the runway area for people to see. It was a cool event. It was free and the parking was free too. There were a lot of vendors selling souvenirs and food and drinks. There were high school science clubs present to show off their robots. I saw some boy scouts - at least that's what I think they were. I saw some people speaking German. They were wearing caps which read "BMW Motorrad", which means "BMW motorcycle". Cool. I can read German, although I'm not good enough yet to understand what they were saying. I took like 90 pictures of the event. I left before the show was over. I had had enough and I was tired and sweaty and ready to leave. It was cool. Next year, I will try to get some people to go with me. | | |
| Ich fuhr gestern mit meinen Freunden nach Torrance, um das Oktoberfest zu geniessen.
I went with some friends yesterday to the city of Torrance to enjoy Octoberfest at Alpine Village. It was, well... less than I expected it would be. I was hoping that it would take place in a park but instead of being in a park, it was in a parking lot. And the people there were mostly not German. The band was German, but everyone else was just L.A. people. It was L.A. What did I expect? We sat in the asian crowd. We saw some people who were evidently from UCLA at another table across the way from where we were. Well, at least there were six of us, which was a good turnout, and the food was good. We had sausages, German fried potato, German potato salad and sauerkraut. And of course, beer. I bought a 16 oz. but could only finish about 12 oz. of it. I was all red in the face. One of my friends took the rest. Weak, huh? I'm not much of a drinker and have low tolerance for alcohol. Afterwards, we went to Tapioca Express at Focus Plaza to buy some soft drinks there. I'm soft. I like soft drinks. Next year, I will try a different Oktoberfest.

| This was Labor Day weekend, and it was a weekend well spent. I went up north to Fremont with my friend Jason to attend an old buddy of mine Thomas' wedding. He was wed to his girlfriend and best friend Esther.
We left Saturday morning at around six after picking up a friend of Jason's Sherene. We got there at around 12:30 pm and the wedding started at 2. At the reception, Thomas performed his serenade, with the help of his groomsmen, BSB style. Haha. I saw some old friends from UCLA. It was like a little reunion. The wedding was large - about 500 people. Thomas is a nice person to know. He is friendly, outgoing and cares about people. His congeniality is consistent with his role as a pastor. I'm glad I know him.
I saw Jerry Pei, who flew in with his significant other from Boston. That was the first time that I saw her, although I had previously heard rumor of his having met someone. "Nice catch," I told my friends. They met at a John Mayer concert, so the story goes. She's pretty cute and has good taste in music. And she's Christian too. "An upgrade from his previous girlfriend," someone uttered (I won't say who). Don't worry, we were just joking. We all love his previous girlfriend.
After the wedding, some of us went to eat Italian before heading downtown to a San Jose nightclub called Fahrenheit - my first nighclub ever I must say. Hey I'm just a sheltered boy, I guess.
I was a bit out of my element, I must say. Not really my scene, but I had fun nonetheless. The girls there were ugly, but they started to look pretty good after a couple of drinks. I did some dancing and got thumbs up from my friends for that. But I was afraid to talk to the girls. Thumbs down. I've got to work on that. I'm just a scared little boy. They were all looking at me and that made me self-conscious. Check me out. Hehe.
Philbert put on the afterburners all weekend. He hung out with some of the bride's maids, both right after the wedding and at the nightclub. He chose to hang out with them over hanging out with the guys after the wedding. We gave him a hard time for that. Feel-Butt.
On Sunday, Leonard Nimoy gave us a tour around the Bay Area. We took a little walk in Golden Gate Park, which was cut short when Feel-Butt gave us a call and we had to go meet up with him at a harbor. We went to this place called Fishermans Wharf and had some crab. From there, one can take a look at Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. At night we had Korean barbecue. Afterwards, we picked up Jason's friend Gina and went up close to the Bridge and took some pictures. Then we went to this place nearby called the Palace of Fine Arts. It was closed-off and under construction, so we looked at it through the fence. Afterward, we went to Gina's pad to crash for a bit before we headed back to the Holiday Inn. That was my tour of San Francisco, with all its hills, its buildings and houses standing shoulder to shoulder and all its trolleys going to and fro.
On Monday morning we headed back to L.A. with friend Jeff Chen. During the ride to, and back from, the Bay Area Jason and Sherene had good talks about guys and girls. Some true words were said over the weekend I believe, so I must write them down from my memory before they are lost. Here records some of the things said in those conversations about the sexes, with some interesting tidbits here and there:
A lot of guys admire Sherene from a distance. Yeah she's cute, but what else has she got? I wondered.
Girls want a guy who is confident. This confirmed what I knew all along. Sherene was a person who made much sense during this trip, I must say.
Girls want a guy who can provide financial security. Yes, yes, I know.
Girls want a guy who knows how to express his love for her. He should be smart about giving the girl romantic thoughts and feelings. Surprise her by sending her flowers where she works. Girls like that kind of stuff. He shouldn't have to be given hints about that. Nothing frustrates a girl more than when a guy has a low romantic I.Q.
Girls want what they can't get. And when they've gotten that thing, they no longer want it. Be too easy, and they lose interest. Guys have to give them some kind of challenge. And when she's snatched the guy, he must make her work hard to maintain the relationship, or else she'll move on to the next challenge.
What's an H-bomb? It's when a guy attended Harvard and has an opportunity to mention it in conversation, and does so. When he does, he has dropped the "H-bomb". "So where did you go to school?" "I went to Harvard."
Girls have a lot of power over guys. A girl can build a guy up, or she can tear him down. A guy needs a girl to validate his desirability. A girl can make a guy feel confident, or she can make him feel insecure. Wuss.
If a guy is persistent, he will win the girl over. Girls are like trees. If you chop a tree long enough, eventually it'll fall. It depends on the girl. Not all girls are like that.
What happens in Vegas ... stays in Vegas. Except for venereal disease.
Sherene's boyfriend out-ranks all of us. He went to Harvard. He is a doctor. He is modest and does not flaunt anything. He knows how to dance well - swing and other ballroom dances with which I'm sorry to say I'm not familiar. And to top it all off, he is an experienced snowboarder and cyclist. He is so smart and he does all those cool things to boot. He is a good catch for Sherene, we all agreed.
They had a discussion about choice and free will. Sherene mentioned the biblical teaching of predestination - about how, at our level, it seems like we're choosing to follow Jesus, but in reality God puts it in our hearts to follow him. "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19).
Add me to that list of guys. Sie ist heiss.
Sherene has a certain clarity of thought and articulation that is rare, I think. She speaks with confidence and experience. She is direct and cuts out the crud. She just makes sense, I must say. She's really nice too.
Of course Jason and Jeff had a lot to say too, and I learned a lot from them.
We made it home to L.A. and then I proceeded to hang out with my friend Shirley. We went to the Santa Anita mall to do some shopping and to watch "Wedding Crashers." Marvin joined us. That was a nice way to end the weekend. I should have watched that movie before Esther and Thomas' wedding. Oh well. | | |

| Earlier my grandma called me up and asked me if I had a girlfriend and I told her that I didn't. So she told me that she knew this one girl and that she was a recent grad from college, that she is now working, and that she "wants to be my friend". So I shuddered after she had told me that and I knew what my grandma was trying to do. I told her that I didn't want her to find me a girl and that I wanted to look for one by myself. So okay she let that topic go. And then a few days later she calls me about it again. Ahh!!! So she convinced me to go, and I was just going to make my grandma happy really. I had very low expectations about this girl that I was to meet, I mean, come on, agreeing to a setup??? By the way, for me, it wasn't a set up. I wasn't being set up. I was just there for a meet-n-greet. Anyhow, so two weeks ago I went with my grandma to see the girl and to have lunch with her and talk. When I first saw her, I knew that she was not the one. You know, you just know, you know? So I tried to be nice and to find out more about her. I was glad that she had friends and didn't feel too sorry for her. So an hour and a half later my grandma and I left, and I explained to my grandma how I felt about her and told her why she should never try to find me a girl because I'm just too picky. Plus, I had my principles, which I didn't know how to explain to her because my Toy-San Chinese was really bad. Anyway, I was glad that that was over. But wait. The story is not over. During the week this past week, my grandma called AGAIN (!) and asked me to go see her again. What!? After I had explained to her! So I said no and explained it to her again. So okay, that was that, so I thought. And then the next day, that girl's GRANDMA called me up and tried to give me that girl's number!! I declined. Can you believe that? Chinese traditional people. | | |
